Zed; The Last Thing I Expected - Chapter 40 - ShaScotty23 (2024)

Chapter Text

The winter months passed by at a brisk pace, and Lemona spent most of that time working her new job. When she wasn’t working she was mostly at home, keeping Zed occupied.

Over time his leg grew back in full, and the cracks and chunks missing off of his exoskeleton recovered as well. He ditched the crutches and became much more mobile within days, returning to the kitchen where he was awfully excited to resume the position of head chef. Lemona didn’t mind that one bit, admittingly getting tired of her own cooking.

The snow was light over the season, and Zed grew to appreciate the weather when it wasn’t in the form of a violent blizzard. His heated body maintained his temperature, leaving him unaffected by the frozen environment. Lemona put his body to good use in keeping her warm as well, and Zed found such offers completely irrefusable.

Christmas was quiet and quaint, but cozy. Zed was quite fascinated by the traditional gift exchange, which Lemona couldn’t help but be endeared by. She gifted him a homemade scarf, and although he had no gift in return to give, Lemona had other methods for making it up to her.

Their shared passion for each other made every day feel like one prolonged fantasy. He took her wherever he could have her. In the bed, on the couch, pinned to the floors, held against the walls. Even splayed on the kitchen table and on a singular occasion, bent over the washing machine.

It was becoming increasingly easier for her to take him, adjusting to his unorthodox size and shape more and more every bout.

The steam on the windows seemed to be ever present.

There were plenty of visitors in their time. Vegeta and Zed would spar in the snow while Lemona and Bulma discussed the tumultuous process of pregnancy.

Piccolo and Nail also made regular appearances, with Zed insisting that he treat them to a meal as a show of his gratitude. Regardless if Namekians had to eat or not, they gave his cooking a chance, and found themselves presently surprised. They even went back for seconds.

Lemona took a leap of faith and invited Auntie Pom over to properly introduce her to her inhuman companion. And although a bit perturbed by his appearance initially, Pom quickly came around to Zed’s charms and personality, welcoming him to her home anytime. But Lemona has yet agreed to taking up such an arrangement.

And before the two of them knew it, a new spring had arrived.

Little would they expect along with it the return of a familiar face.

Lemona hummed softly, tucked snuggly under the blankets of her bed. The heat that radiated off Zed, laying beside her, was down right addictive. And if she had it her way, she’d never leave its side.

“Good morning Lemona”. Zed spoke softly before a yawn cut through his words. Lemona had learned over the winter that Zed never actually required sleep, but was rather, just something he enjoyed doing for recreational’s sake. She rubbed at her eyes and grunted.

“Mornin’”

“Did you sleep well?” He asked, leaning over to peck her forehead with the soft press of his lips. Lemona giggled at the sweet gesture.

“Better with you here that’s for sure”. She grinned as she felt his arm sling over her shoulder, pulling her over to face him directly.

“You say that every time”. He raised a brow, a knowing smirk on his face.

“And I mean it every time”. She splayed a palm across his chest. “Your body is set to the perfect temperature, perfect for comfy snoozing”. She grinned at the effect she had on him as he shivered. It had become obvious to both of them very quickly that Zed had a clear preference for being called ‘perfect’. Neither knew exactly why, but Lemona was determined to use it to her advantage.

“The perfect temperature eh?” Zed teased, snuggling in closer to her. Lemona gasped as a sneaky hand snaked its way around to her back and up under her shirt.

“Zed, please, we’ll get too hot if we do that now…” Lemona playfully pushed him back, the anticipating grin across her cheeks betraying her words.

“I have a simple solution to that issue, Lemona”.

“Oh?” She dipped in closer to his face. “And that would be?”

“We just have to remove a layer,” his other hand reached for the buttons on the front of her pajama shirt. “Or maybe two…”

Lemona bit her lip, a soft moan slipping out..

“I suppose it’s worth a try…”

It took Zed seconds to have every piece of Lemona’s clothing discarded somewhere in

the bed sheets. He flipped her around to face away from him, and gently lifted one of her legs so he could slot between them. Lemona let out a shaky breath as he sheathed himself inside of her once more, canting his hips softly against her.

“Look at that, you’re still stretched from last night”. He chuckled with a hint of disbelief.

“What a shock…” Lemona rolled her eyes with a lazy smile. “It’s like the girl can’t catch a break or something…”

“Oh please”. He bucked a bit firmer, just once to make her squeak. “At this rate I don’t think you ever want a break from me”.

“Hmmm… you may be onto something there bug boy”. She purred, craning her head back to see his face. “After all, you are one of a kind. I wouldn’t be able to get this experience anywhere else”. She gave him a lingering kiss, and his low rumble of a laugh vibrated down her throat.

“You have such a way with words”. He crooned, thrusting softly into her loving heat.

“Ah yes, I have such a way with stroking your massive ego”. Lemona teased, setting her hips back against him. He hissed at the added pressure.

“You could always stroke something else”. He whispered before nibbling the shell of her ear. Lemona waved him off, chuckling.

“Your something else is a little busy at the moment, isn’t it?” She pressed back into him harder than before and he groaned against the back of her neck.

“Fair enough”. He growled, pressing his lips to her skin and sucking harshly. Eventually pulling back with a triumphant look at the sight of the dark patch forming below her hairline. She scoffed at him, the smile persistent on her face.

“Please leave marks where I can hide them”.

“Then what would be the point of marking you?” he asked, propping himself up on his hands to loom over her. “I want the world to know that you are mine”.

Lemona shivered at the sentiment, giggling again as he dipped down to kiss her once more. They stayed like that for a while, kissing chastely while their hips circled lazily against each other. Finding a new position, Lemona wrapped her hands around his back, poking at the tip of his retracted tail. The sounds he made in response were downright criminal, and Lemona loved to hear them. Her daring finger slipped inside of the tip and he let out a shameless whine.

Just before anything could escalate beyond tender love making, Zed lifted his head, a curious look on his strong features.

“What is it Zed?” Lemona asked, running a hand through her damp hair.

“I hear a vehicle approaching the front yard at a reasonable pace”.

“A vehicle?” Lemona sat up slightly, propping the pillows behind her. “Maybe it’s Nail and Piccolo, they definitely wanted to eat a Zed-made breakfast again”.

“No it’s not their ship”. Zed shook his head, cautiously retracting his phallus from within her. Lemona sighed at the lack of contact, pressing her thighs together.

“It sounds like a truck”. He stated, making his way out of the bed.

“A truck?” Lemona lifted up the blankets, rapidly searching for her clothing. “What kind of a truck?”

“The kind we know all too well”.

Lemona yanked back up her underwear and grabbed her nearby housecoat as she stumbled out of bed after Zed who had strode into the living room. She pulled the tie tight at her waist and approached the window, peeking out past the curtain. There sat in her front yard was a familiar rusty green pick-up truck. The large man who stepped out of it, with his fiery red hair and dark mechanical arms was also unmistakable.

“Holy sh*t it’s Gold!” She bit out a whisper as Zed leaned in to get a look himself.

“Unbelievable”. Zed rolled his eyes. “He actually got the pile of junk fixed?”

Lemona elbowed him in the ribs and he grunted.

“I thought you said he took the bullet for Gero’s crimes?” Zed asked, rubbing his side.

“He did”. Lemona stood back, letting the curtain fall back into place. “Maybe he’s on parole or something”.

“Well let’s go find out”. Zed smirked, heading for the door.

“Woah!” Lemona squawked, scrambling past him to block his path. “Hold on there Zed, you can’t just waltz out there”. She held out a hand, waving a finger in his face. He looked down at her with an unimpressed glare, crossing his arms.

“Why not?”

“Gold thinks you’re dead. Remember?” She peered back out the window, watching as Gold crossed the front lawn. “Let me talk to him first ok? I’ll ease him into it”. She looked back to Zed with big eyes and he faltered, taking a step back with a defeated huff.

“Alright”. He pouted, returning down the hall. “I’ll await my cue”.

“Thank you!” She called after him before taking a steady breath, and with one final adjustment of her housecoat, she took hold of the door and stepped outside.

It was a lovely spring morning, flowers had begun to bud amongst the verdant blades of grass and the birds sang a lovely song. Lemona watched as the breeze brushed through Gold’s tousled hair.

“Hey!” Lemona yelled, her hand shooting up into a wave as she greeted Gold from the doorstep. He smiled back at her, making his way to the bottom step. Lemona didn’t know quite how to describe it, but it seemed Gold’s once icy blue eyes had finally lost their frosty glaze.

“Good morning Lemona”. He eyed her quickly from head to toe and gave her an amused look. “I didn’t get you out of bed did I?”

Lemona blushed, realizing how little she was wearing in the moment. She let out a loud laugh and batted a hand in the air.

“Oh no, just a lazy morning that’s all. Got the day off…” Her words trailed off as she got lost in his smile. He looked so genuinely elated just to be standing in front of her. Lemona swallowed the lump in her throat, and without another word, stepped down and took Gold into a tight embrace. He gasped softly from the contact, honestly surprised by her display. With hesitant hands he wrapped his arms around her, closing his eyes and sighing peacefully.

“It’s so good to see you again”. Lemona confessed as she pulled back, a bit bashful.

“Likewise”. Gold nodded.

“So what’s up with you?” She asked, pulling away proper and adjusting her robe. “How are you back here so soon? Your sentence can’t be done already -can it?” She quirked her head to the side, eyeing him suspiciously. Gold chuckled, taking a seat down on the step.

“Well Mr. Wright proved to be a very reliable defense attorney. He was able to shorten my sentence considerably”. Gold explained. “And the monetary compensation courtesy of Capsule Corporation was also greatly appreciated”. He muttered, casting a smirk up his cheek.

“Bulma…” Lemona shook her head, taking a seat next to him. “I should've known”.

“I’ve already been in contact with your Aunt and the municipality of Ginger Town. I’m in the process of regaining possession of the apartment flat”.

“That’s awesome Gold,” She flashed him a wide grin. “Are you gonna relaunch the Repair Shop business?”

“That’s the plan” He rubbed the underside of his nose. “I heard you are now under new employment. Congratulations”.

“Thanks”. Lemona hopped back onto her feet, careful to keep her robe covering her body. “It sure beats the boring-ass office gig”.

Gold smiled back up at her, before rising to his feet. Lemona took a good look at his arms and legs, the dark plating accented with golden details was especially eye-catching.

“Keeping them that way now huh?” She asked, tapping his forearm.

“There’s no point in hiding them”. He sighed, sounding rather tired. “The whole world knows my story now, so I might as well embrace it”. Gold looked about the yard, eager to change the subject.

“So you’ve been doing alright”, he met her eyes once more, “alone?”

Alone?” Lemona barked out a laugh. “Far from it”.

Gold gave her a look of utter confusion as she planted her hands on her hips, smiling triumphantly. Her eyes glanced over to the front door and his followed suit.

“Lemona is that who I think it is?” A voice called from inside, smooth, deep, and completely unmistakable.

Gold’s eyes widened at the sound, completely fixated as the front door swung open. Zed flashed him a grin of perfect teeth as he leaned in the doorway, his arms crossed.

“Good morning”.

“You’re alive?” Gold’s voice was barely above a whisper. Lemona watched Gold carefully, his tall frame trembling like a leaf. She took a gentle hold of his cold palm and gained his attention for just a moment to nod, reassuring him that everything was okay.

His hand ripped from hers as he rushed forward towards Zed, who had stepped out onto the grass, preparing for his reaction. The look in Gold’s eyes were conflicted with melancholy and happiness.

“You’re alive!!” He shouted, slamming into Zed to pull him into a terribly tight hug. Zed gasped at the affectionate gesture before chuckling quietly. He returned the sentiment, placing his arms around him and setting his pale hands on his back. Zed huffed as he patted him on the spine. Gold didn’t say a word, he only squeezed tighter.

“Hey there, easy on the squeezing”. Zed breathed out, “with your strength you might actually crack something!” Gold mumbled something unintelligible into Zed’s shoulder before pulling back, his face awash with confusion and excitement.

“How did you? I thought you were-”

Zed placed a firm finger to his lips, quieting him immediately.

“Lazuli had acquired my Master Cell and fled the site of the explosion”. Zed explained, keeping his finger pressed in place. “During an arduously slow regenerative process I was discovered by a pair of Namekians, who eventually brought me back home”. Zed cast a loving glance to Lemona as he finally removed his finger. Gold took a heavy breath.

“The Namekians, they’re still around?”

“We chat daily at this point”. Lemona stated casually, rejoining the conversation. “If it wasn’t for their help, I don’t think I would’ve even seen Zed again”.

“Lemona I would find my way back to you one way or another”. Zed stated proudly, lifting his chin. Gold’s eyes ticked between the two of them.

“Fascinating. You two are utterly fascinating”.

Lemona flustered at his words, trying to hide more of herself in her robe. In contrast to Zed, who stood taller and more prideful than before.

“Regardless of how I got back here, I’m glad to see you come home Gold”. Zed flashed a friendly smile. Which had Gold quickly raising a brow.

“Home? Don’t have one at the moment”.

“Nonsense!” Zed leaned forward, slinging an arm around Gold’s wide shoulders. “I’ve come to learn that home is not defined by a mere building, but rather, home is where your family resides”. Zed brushed Gold’s nose with his thumb. “And you are my brother are you not?”

“Brother?”

“Yes!” Zed beamed, practically pulling him into a chokehold. “Brothers by blood, and by bond”. He regaled, pumping his free fist.

“You’re getting sappy again bug boy”. Lemona teased, slowly worming Zed’s grip loose so Gold could breathe. Zed puckered his lips and tutted, removing his arm from around Gold and patting Lemona on the head.

You, hush”.

They were both quickly distracted by Gold, who had burst out into a rare fit of laughter. Zed and Lemona watched him in silent awe, his normally reserved demeanor thrown to the wayside. His laughter pittered out as he rested his hands on his knees, letting out one final wheeze before speaking again.

Zed, you’re ridiculous”. He chuckled again, failing to compose himself. He sat a comforting hand on his plated shoulder. “But at this point I can’t see myself refusing such a proposal”.

Zed stared at him blankly while Gold took a moment to think, suddenly struck with an idea. He hummed loudly, placing a hand to his chin.

“In fact, how about I in turn offer you an opportunity?”

“And that would be?” Zed leaned forward.

“Well, I can’t possibly run this repair shop business in complete solitude. I’ll need a partner. Someone who is intelligent, strong, and adaptable”. He raised him a brow. “Interested?”

“You want Zed to be your business partner?” Lemona gawked, weaning her way in between them, one hand on each of their chests. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea…”

“Why not?” Gold asked, as if the idea he suggested would have no repercussions.

“I like the sound of it,” Zed chimed in. “It sounds exciting”.

“The people of Ginger Town don’t know about Zed,” She leaned in closer to whisper,

“they might not take it well”.

Gold looked back up to Zed, who wore a rather offended expression. Gold gave him a nod and placed a hand on Lemona’s shoulder.

“The world now knows what my father has done through my testimonies. Personally, I am done hiding who I really am from the public eye”. He pushed Lemona gently to the side, stepping forward to throw his arm around Zed’s shoulders, looking back at her determinedly. “I am a walking biomechanical miracle, and I’m going to embrace that going forward. The world be damned what they think of me”.

“Gold…” Lemona shrunk in her robe, taken aback by his defiance.

She also had to admit, she was quite proud of him for standing up for himself.

“And Zed deserves the right of an attempt at least”. He shook Zed’s shoulder, bringing him out of his daze, and shot him a smile. “If you are able to accept him Lemona for who he is, then why can’t others?”

“A fair point…” Lemona glanced down to her slipper-clad feet. “But, what if they try to hurt him?”

Both men stilled at her hurt tone, they shot each other an understanding look before Gold removed his arm. Zed stepped forward, wrapping Lemona in his arms. He rested a hand atop of her head and smoothed her hair. She sniveled quietly.

“Lemona, it’s alright”. He cooed. “Remember what you once said to me? That people would most likely fear me before acceptance?”

“Yeah…” She pressed her cheek harder against his torso.

“Well that’s a risk that I’m willing to take. Through you Lemona I have experienced so much of this world. And I must confess, I’ve become a bit of a glutton for the stuff. I want more. I want to walk and talk amongst the populace like it’s the most normal, mundane thing in the world”. He pulled back just a tad so he could cup her rosy cheek. “Let me try this, just once. And if all goes wrong remember that I’m bulletproof”. He finished with a cheeky grin.

Lemona stood quiet, thinking everything over. He let go of her and gave her some space, him and Gold watching her with hopeful anticipation.

“Well…” She grunted, scratching the back of her head.

“Please?” Zed stuck out his bottom lip and let it quiver. Lemona swallowed at the sight, easily swayed by his innocent demeanor.

“This could be a fantastic educational opportunity for him”. Gold added, holding up a finger matter-of-factly.

With their combined puppy-eyes Lemona folded, holding her head to the sky and letting out a groan like a frustrated parent.

“Oh alright fine!” She threw her arms down by her sides, and both men watched as the robe slid off one shoulder. She didn’t bother to adjust it. “Just let me get dressed, and we’ll all go to town -together”.

“Excellent”. Gold clapped his hands together, which caused a small spark. “We can take the truck”.

“Oh this is splendid!” Zed’s wings buzzed with excitement as he whisked her off her feet and twirled her around. “Thank you Lemona!” And he peppered her face with kisses.

“Well what can I say? Those lab rats held you back all your life, why should I do the same?” Lemona shrugged, adjusting the robe to the best of her ability in his arms.

“Oh my darling…” Zed preened before pulling her in for a passionate kiss. Gold tried to avert his eyes as the robe draped down, removing all of Lemona’s modesty. Zed pulled back from their embrace, Lemona letting out an embarrassed squeak at her exposed breasts. He only chuckled, whispering against her lips as if they didn’t have an audience. “I love you…”

“Zed!” She scrambled to cover herself, “not so brazenly…”

Zed let out another laugh as his gaze drifted to Gold, with his eyes widened and cheeks flushed, clearly having just seen more than he should have. Zed decided to tease him.

“What? Just making a subtle statement”. He answered Lemona while giving Gold a snide smirk, clearly proud of making him uncomfortable.

“Your subtlety came in loud and clear, brother”. Gold returned the snide expression, watching Lemona try and fail to cover herself. “She’s yours”.

“And don’t you forget it”.

“Good grief…” Lemona rolled her eyes at their antics. But soon smiled to herself.

If this was her new normal, then she was looking forward to it.

“This could either go surprisingly well, or be a complete dumpster fire”. Lemona croaked as the truck pulled into her Aunt’s driveway.

“Don’t worry, we’re in this together Lemona”. Gold spoke calmly, shutting the truck off.

“Can I get up now?” Zed asked, having laid himself in the truck bed for the entirety of the drive. “I’m starting to cramp back here”.

“Just give us a moment Zed,” Lemona looked up and down the quiet street. With the cost clear she nodded to Gold. “Ok, you can get up”.

“Thank Kami…” Zed groaned, sitting up and rubbing his neck. He looked about the neighbourhood, eyes widening with awe. “So this is society… fascinating”.

“Straight inside Zed, we’re easing into this”. Gold instructed, stepping out onto the walkway. Lemona and Zed were right behind him as he knocked on the door.

Auntie Pom was quick to answer.

“Oh my… well this was unexpected”. She gave them a knowing grin as she let them inside. Zed’s eyes were moving frantically, taking in every aspect of his new surroundings as he entered with slow steps. “Make yourselves comfortable”.

“Thanks for having us Auntie”. Lemona gave her a hug. “I appreciate the help”.

“Oh don’t worry yourself dear, Zed has his charms, I’m sure he’ll win the hearts of many in Ginger Town”. She pulled back, smiling up at Gold. “It’s good to see that you’re a free bird too”.

“I’m happy to be back, Pom”. Gold smiled, soft and genuine. The three were soon interrupted by a yelp in the kitchen.

“Oh that sounds like Krillin…” Pom cringed, adjusting her glasses.

“Krillin’s here?!” Lemona gawked. “I thought we’d be alone, Auntie…”

“I saw him at the store this morning and invited him for lunch”. Pom reasoned as they rushed to the kitchen.

And there was Krillin, white as a sheet, clinging to the corner of the room. Zed stood opposite to him, quiet and unmoving.

“Hey Krillin!” Lemona tried to act casual, stepping in front of Zed and giving her friend a wave. Krillin let out a weak wheeze, his eyes darting from Lemona to Pom to the tall guy in the back and then to the creature who just entered the kitchen.

“Hey Lemona…” He swallowed thickly, trembling. “Do you know this guy?”

“Of course I do”. She put her hands on her hips and huffed, glaring up at Zed. “Are you going to introduce yourself or what? Don’t expect me to do it for you Mr. Independent”.

“Right…” Zed gave a meek nod, lacking his usual confidence. He approached Krillin with hesitant steps before sticking out a hand. “My name is Zed, it’s nice to meet you”. His eyes flicked back to Lemona, who gave him a thumbs up.

“The name’s Krillin…” Krillin gave an unsure smile, taking Zed’s hand and shaking back. “Umm… What exactly are you Zed?”

“Well I was created in a lab-”

“He’s a friend Krillin”. Lemona piped back in, separating their conjoined hands that were still absentmindedly shaking. “He’s really special to me”. She gave Zed a small smile and his cheeks darkened. Krillin looked between the two of them, quickly getting the picture.

“You’re dating an alien?”

Not an alien”. They corrected him in unison, causing Pom to chuckle.

“Why don’t we all sit down for a bite to eat”. Pom suggested. “Zed can answer all of your questions Krillin if he’s comfortable doing so”.

“Thank you Auntie”. Zed bowed his head slightly.

“Good, because I’ve got a bucket full”. Krillin gave an awkward laugh, his shoulders relaxing ever so slightly as he took a seat.

“Lovely, I’ve missed your cooking Pom”. Gold spoke up, taking a seat next to Krillin. The shorter man eyed him suspiciously. Gold didn’t meet his gaze but could feel the nervous eyes on him. “Can I help you with something?” He deadpanned.

“I hope you don’t mind me asking but aren’t you the guy from all those Red Ribbon stories?” He nodded to himself. “Yeah, you’re that crazy doctor’s son aren’t you?”

Pom handed Gold a cup of coffee and he took a long sip.

“I do not wish to be recognized for what my father has done. Rather, I want to be known for what I myself have accomplished”. He stated plainly, taking another sip.

“Well said dear,” Pom grinned, pulling a casserole from the oven. “Now who’s hungry?”

After lunch the group went for a walk around town. Pom had a handful of errands to run,

going about like any other day. Lemona commended her aunt’s bravery, taking note of every strange look people gave them as Zed passed by.

But no one had been brave enough to question them.

“This is crazy…” Krillin muttered. “I can’t believe you were involved in that whole Red

Ribbon situation Lemona”. They four of them waited for Pom outside a shop on a more populated street. People avoided eye contact as they briskly passed them.

“Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan them.” Lemona shrugged. Her attention shifted to Zed, who was theoretically sweating bullets, and placed a comforting hand on his arm.

“Doing okay buddy?” She asked.

“Humans hold so many emotions in their eyes, and it feels like they’re all on me”. He clenched his teeth. Gold put a hand on his opposite shoulder.

“Well you do stick out in a crowd”. He joked, causing Zed to release some tension in his shoulders. He pouted, shooting Gold a glare.

“Well you would know, you're getting a fair share of ocular judgement yourself. With those prosthetics of yours”. He sneered, and in response Gold gave him a light shove.

“I can tell you guys are good friends”. Krillin jested, keeping his hands in his pockets.

“Brothers actually”. Lemona corrected him. “Zed insisted”.

Zed perked his head, looking to the nearby intersection where an elderly woman was crossing. He watched her closely.

“What is it?” Gold asked, leaning into his shoulder. Lemona and Krillin were too absorbed in their own conversation to notice. “Is something wrong?”.

“That woman is in danger”. He spoke.

It all happened so quickly after that. A car came screeching down the road. It was apparent to Gold that with the vehicle’s momentum it would not be able to stop in time. The woman continued along at her hindered pace, unaware of the approaching disaster. Zed moved without further consideration, flying out onto the street. He stopped before the woman, assuming a combative stance as the car came careening towards them. He held out a single hand as the car collided into his palm. Zed’s body absorbed all of the inflicting momentum without a flinch, the car’s wheels spun to a complete stop, having stilled at Zed’s touch. A group of bystanders gathered in shock and awe. Lemona gawked at the sight.

“Holy sh*t…”

“We should get over there. Now”. Gold demanded, Lemona and Krillin followed briskly behind him.

“Are you alright Madam?” Zed turned to the woman, hand still on the car’s hood. The woman looked at him with grateful, yet confused, eyes.

“I’m fine, thank you…”

“Good”. Zed turned back to the car and met the driver’s eyes through the windshield, The young man yelped, clearly terrified. “And you?”

“Don’t hurt me!” he shouted, scrambling out of the vehicle with his hands clasped together. “My brakes! They weren’t workin’! Take my money! Just don’t hurt me!” He cowered. Zed quirked his head, quickly glancing to the growing crowd, who were highly curious of how he would respond.

“Money? I don’t want your money citizen. You’ll need it to fix your vehicle”.

“Wha?” the young man asked. He soon went completely quiet as Zed casually grabbed the car by its bumper and lifted it into the air. He examined the undercarriage, humming as if he were familiar with the anatomy of a car.

“Hey Gold, come take a look at this”. He called out, acting as if holding an entire vehicle steady above his head was nothing to behold.

“What is it?” Gold answered, manoeuvring through the crowd of invested onlookers. He joined him under the vehicle, having complete faith that Zed wouldn’t drop it on them.

“Something is clearly wrong with this vehicle,” He announced, before dropping to an embarrassed whisper, “but I cannot identify it”.

“The brake line is busted”. Gold pointed to the dangling piece. Zed let out a sigh of relief, nodding along.

“Can we fix that?” he asked. “The man offered me money earlier”.

“I never specialized in automotive Zed…”

“Well it’s never too late to learn a new skill”.

“Zed…” Gold huffed, turning to the man who clearly owned the vehicle. “I have a truck with a tow on the back, want a lift to the nearest garage?”

“What a wasted opportunity”. Zed sighed, placing the car back on the ground with surprising softness. The young man stared at Gold, then to Zed, and back to Gold.

“A lift would be nice I guess…” He muttered.

“THAT WAS SO COOL!” A high-pitched voice called out. Zed turned his head and watched as a pair of small children plowed past Lemona and Krillin and stopped excitedly at his feet.

“You picked up that car like it was nothing!” One kid beamed. “And you flew!”

“Mister, are you like a superhero or something?!” The other asked, raising on his toes.

Zed was speechless, eyes swimming about the crowd as he scratched his cheek. Gold could tell he was getting overwhelmed, and set a hand on his shoulder to anchor him.

“Yes. I think the whole town would like to know who you are”. Another voice called, one

that Gold recognized. He turned to see Reela Truce, making her way through the crowd with microphone in hand, her brother camera-bound behind her.

“Reela?” Gold asked, raising a brow. He tightened his grip on Zed’s shoulder.

“This could get messy…” Lemona groaned, stepping out to take Zed’s hand in her own, giving it a soft squeeze. He gazed down at her, calming as he focused on her. The crowd exchanged hushed whispers at the action, Lemona ignored them.

“Don’t get yourself too worked up kid, I ain’t stalking ya”. Reela winked at Gold. “I live in this town too, remember?”

“Of course…”

“So!” She redirected her attention to Zed. “Who are you?” She pointed the microphone towards him and he blanked. Lemona squeezed his hand again.

“It’s okay, just introduce yourself like you did with Krillin earlier”. She whispered.

“Right”. He took hold of Reela’s microphone, leaving her rather surprised, but she didn’t try to stop him. Zed breathed deeply as his eyes scanned the crowd, trying to calm his nerves.

Lemona was right, their eyes were full of fear, but some were sprinkled with intrigue, interest. He tapped the top of the microphone, mimicking what he’d seen in the movies.

“You can all call me Zed”. He announced, the microphone echoing his voice into everyone’s ears. His eyes ticked down to Lemona for a brief moment, hesitant. Lemona smiled up at him with encouragement, granting him newfound confidence. He placed the mic back to his mouth.

“And I’m your friend”.

A week after Zed’s first trip to Ginger Town, Lemona decided to throw a party celebrating Gold’s return. The turnout was surprising, Gold was there of course. Alongside Krillin who had given Auntie Pom a lift. A very pregnant Bulma, alongside Vegeta, were the next to arrive. Zed couldn’t help but tease Vegeta for his accomplishments. Lastly, Nail and Piccolo had accepted the invitation. Pom was absolutely thrilled with them, striking up a good conversation with Nail before finding her way to the kitchen.

Her and Zed sat at the table, as she taught him how to fold various appetizers. His larger fingers proved to be a hindrance at first, but he quickly -to no one’s surprise- adapted.

“I think I’m finally getting the hang of this…” He smiled, placing another piece on the baking sheet. He beamed like a child who had just earned a drawing on the fridge.

“You’re a natural dear…” Pom smiled, rolling up her sleeves. “Keep it up”.

Lemona was out on the porch at the barbecue, conversing with Krillin who stood at her side with a beer can.

“Quite the crowd you have here Lemona”. He mused, watching as Vegeta and the green guy named Piccolo traded blows in the backyard. “How long do you think those two will be at it? I don’t think either of them have even broken a sweat yet”.

“Namekians don’t sweat”. Lemona said as she flipped a burger.

“And Vegeta won’t stop until there’s food on the table”. Bulma spoke up, approaching them with another tray of raw burgers.

“And he eats a lot I take it?” Krillin asked, adjusting his cap.

“You have no idea…” Bulma groaned, sitting the tray down before returning inside, hand on her bloated body. In turn Nail stepped out onto the porch, taking a seat in the empty chair next to Gold, who was watching the birds chirp in the nearby feeder.

“They are quite fascinating aren’t they?” Nail asked, sipping his vitamin water.

“Yes,” Gold smiled, “Watching them puts me at peace”.

“And I bet you are at more peace now than ever before”.

“I am”. Gold took a sip of his own drink, holding out a hand for a bird to land in his palm.

Nail watched the bird bob its head, and then looked at Gold's relaxed expression.

“You are a kind soul Gold,” Nail stuck out his own hand and watched as the bird hopped into his palm. “And I believe I speak for myself, Piccolo, and everyone else who was victim to your father, when I say: thank you”.

Gold merely nodded at the sentiment.

“Food’s ready!” Zed called from the backdoorway, beckoning everyone inside.

“It’s about time,” Vegeta grunted, wiping the blood from his lip. Piccolo smirked back at him, proud of the mark he left.

“I don’t have much of an appetite, but I guess I can indulge myself”. Piccolo spoke, stretching his green arms, all of the bruises Vegeta left healing rapidly.

“I just hope you made enough for everyone brother”. Gold teased, being the last one to head inside. “Vegeta looks hungry enough to eat the entirety”.

“Not while I’m present”. Zed smirked, sticking out his hand to close the door behind him. Gold quickly found the sturdy arm slung over his shoulder.

“Now let’s get to celebrating eh? We’re free birds now brother”. Zed grinned as they made their way to the living room.

Everybody had already made themselves comfortable. Vegeta sat protectively next to

Bulma on the couch, arm around her shoulder as she held herself. Auntie Pom took the other seat next to Bulma, her maternal instincts driving her to dote on the pregnant woman in the room. Krillin sat on the arm of the couch, nursing his third beer. Piccolo and Nail took their places in their preferred chairs. Everyone sat conversing with each other, plates of food in their laps. Gold took a seat in the last available chair while Zed returned to the kitchen.

And there was Lemona, standing over the table plucking treats from various trays, filling her own plate with food. Zed came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her stomach. He rested his chin on her shoulder and hummed.

“Can I help you with something?” She mused, raising a brow.

“Not particularly…” Zed drawled, nuzzling his cheek against hers. “Just enjoying your company, your warmth”. Lemona chuckled.

“You and I both know who the human heater is in this relationship”. She gently pushed his face away and he whined. “And it’s not me”.

“But technically Lemona, I am not completely human”. He rebutted, letting go of her and grabbing his own plate to fill up.

“You’re human enough for me”. Lemona winked, caressing his cheek and giving it a kiss. Zed flushed as he made a blissful smile, humming with delight. Lemona swayed by him, bumping her hips into his as she passed, and went off to the living room. Zed quickly piled his plate and followed her out. There were no seats left, so Lemona opted to stand, quickly joining the conversation.

“So, when does your business reopen Gold?” Bulma asked, popping a breaded bite into her mouth. Vegeta frowned as she took more food off of his plate.

“About two weeks. I’m still in the midst of cleaning everything, making it presentable again”. He sat his plate in his lap before picking up his burger and taking a bite.

“It’ll be so nice to have your business back in town”. Pom added, “trying to get help from anyone else had become so time consuming”.

“Thank you Pom”.

“And if you ever need a repair Gold don’t be afraid to reach out”. Bulma waved a finger, pointing to his exposed arms. “I know I may not look it but I am a genius”. Gold chuckled.

“Of course. Thank you for your assistance Bulma”.

“It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out”. Krillin said. “Especially with your new partner and all”. He raised an amused brow, looking towards Zed who stood behind Lemona, munching away at the pile on his plate. He perked up as everyone’s eyes rested on him, making a surprised noise. He took a moment to swallow, his cheeks flattening out, and licked his thumb.

“Why yes, I look forward to making a positive contribution to society”. He grinned. “Besides, Gold will need all the help he can get”.

Gold took another bite of his burger, opting not to comment.

“Not to mention you’ll be getting an income”. Lemona nudged him in the side. “You can finally start buying some of the food around here”.

“I suppose that would only be fair”. He popped a rib in his mouth and chewed, gnawing through the bone without second thought. “With the three of us it will be advantageous to have dual income”.

“Three of us?” Lemona startled, placing her plate on a nearby table as she wiped her mouth. “What is Gold moving in or something and you didn’t tell me?”

“I wasn’t privy to such an arrangement”. Gold muttered, shaking his head.

Zed let out a joyous laugh, setting his plate down on the coffee table. Vegeta kept his arms crossed, but he eyed the plate with great temptation.

“No my dear, not Gold. Someone else”.

“Someone else?” She raised a brow. “And that would be?”

“You don’t know?” Zed asked her, looking awfully perplexed.

“I ain’t telepathic like Nail and Piccolo, Zed”. She tapped her foot. “Just tell me”.

“You can’t feel it?”

“Feel what?!” She raised her voice.

Zed’s face softened before he took hold of her, setting an open palm on her lower stomach. Lemona stilled, looking upon him with anticipation.

“The new spark of ki that’s growing inside of you…” He spoke softly.

Lemona’s eyes widened, looking down from his hand and back to this face, where he downright beamed at her.

“I’m… pregnant?” Her voice was barely audible as she clutched at her necklace.

“Oh my Kami…” Bulma gasped slowly, bringing a hand to her mouth. Vegeta had no such reservations, bursting into a loud mocking laughter.

“Well done bug, looks like you can procreate after all…”

“I’m gonna be a great Auntie?” Pom lit up, putting her hands over her heart.

“That’s gonna be one interesting lookin’ kid”. Krillin remarked, emptying his beer can.

“I didn’t think it was possible that you could…” Gold’s voice trailed off, getting sucked into his own tangle of thoughts, trying to recall his father’s old notes.

“This should be entertaining”. Piccolo smirked, resting his cheek on his knuckles.

“Congratulations Lemona,” Nail said, his smile soft and genuine.

Lemona felt like time had frozen in that very moment, all eyes were on her, figuring out she was pregnant at the same time as herself.

And she had no idea how to handle it.

“Lemona?” Zed spoke softly as he held her by the shoulder, he could feel her teetering on her heels. “Is everything alright?”

Thoughts swirled through her head like a storm. But as she gazed up at Zed, looking so concerned yet hopeful for her, for their future; she knew he had no ill intentions. The mental storm ceased, replaced with a warming assurance. And as she looked around to all of her new and strange friends, her new family, she was gifted with a strong intuition that everything was going to turn out just fine. She was about to begin a new chapter in her life, with Zed by her side. A man who knew as little about being a parent as she did.

But they would figure it out; he was instinctually adaptive to damn near everything after all. And they had everyone else in the room to support them.

They were not alone.

Lemona returned to reality, where everyone had gone quiet, eagerly awaiting her response. She took hold of Zed’s free hand, shaking her head softly.

“I’m fine,” She took a deep breath before laughing, looking at everyone in the room and then back to him. She ran a hand through her hair, scratching the back of her head. Zed’s bright magenta eyes bored into her, knowing she had more to say. The grip on her shoulder tightened.

“And?” He asked while her laughter simmered to a quaint chuckle. The kind that always preluded to some kind of humorous remark. Zed had become awfully familiar with those.

He kept a neutral expression whilst awaiting her explanation.

Lemona gave him an amused look, her golden eyes sparkling with a deep affection.

For him.

And only him.

“Honestly Zed,” She shrugged, "at this point, having a baby with you was far from the last thing I expected”.

THE END.
