A2 I can investigate a news item and find out whether it is subjective or objective. Are you doing the exercises online? This is where you can get extra help and follow your own learning path.

####### Before watching

Work together with a classmate. Look at the two headlines. What is the difference between them? Discuss with your classmate.

NO AGREEMENT REACHED AFTER HOURS OF DEBATING BREAKING NEWS

MINISTER REFUSES TO PAY ATTENTION AT IMPORTANT DEBATE BREAKING NEWS

####### During watching

a Read the strategy.

STRATEGY Objective and subjective news

Objective news focuses on facts and makes it clear when something is an opinion. It uses framing to present the news as clearly as possible. Subjective news is oftenbased on personal opinions and interpretations. It uses framing to attract viewersand can ‘sensationalise’ topics. Subjective news is generally more unreliable becauseit leans on sensation more than it does on facts. Therefore, it is important tounderstand the difference. Ask yourself the following questions to find out whethera news item is objective or subjective:

  • Is the news channel known for providing factual or sensational news?
  • Is the information that is presented reliable and backed up by other news channels?
  • What is the effect of framing on the news item?

b Go to a news website and choose a current news video. What is the topic?

c Explain if the information in this video is reliable. Use the information about subjective and objective news from the strategy.

3 What were the downsides of Eleanor and Mateo’s last summer jobs?

4 ‘I learned a lot about how businesses operate.’ Who might have said this, Eleanor or Mateo? Explain your answer.

5 ‘Aside from that, I never regretted it,’ Eleanor says. Does Mateo express any regrets about his summer job as a lifeguard? If so, what is it?

c Read the text below.

For the last couple of summers, I’ve worked at an outdoor educationcentre and summer camp just outside my hometown Winchester. Itteaches you valuable lessons, the most important one being peopleskills. As a counsellor, you have to take care of large group of smallchildren and keep them entertained all day long. By the end of eachday, when I was utterly drained, the last thing I wanted to do was makesmall talk with parents, but I always made a point of being polite andchatting about the children.

There are a couple of skills I learned: I became experienced in conflictresolution from dealing with children who can’t seem to get along. Ilearned how to manage a last-minute crisis and smoothly change planswhen a thunderstorm rolled in and all activities had to immediately bestopped. But more than that, I enjoyed myself. I spent my summers doingsomething I absolutely love.

Dan, 18

Adapted from: ryersonian and eu.usatoday

Write down the similarities in job satisfaction and acquired skills that arementioned in this text compared to What summer jobs actually teach you?

Eleanor: too busy or too quiet, weather dependentMateo: stressful, having to stay focussed all day, physically very demanding

Eleanor, she was talking about the way she was taught to scoop ice cream.

She had to do this in a specific way so that it looked attractive and sopeople would come back. That is basically how many businesses operate.

No, he doesn’t.

Example key: Dan has developed some of the same skills for instance: leadership

skills (Mateo) and interaction (communication) skills (Mateo and Eleanor). He also shares with Mateo the skill to know how to handle stressful situations.

GRAMMAR 14 Relative clauses

Relative clauses give us more information about people, things and situations. There are twotypes of relative clauses: defining and non-defining. Defining clauses give us informationessential to the sentence to understand what or who is referred to. Non-defining clauses donot change the meaning of the sentence when they are left out. You userelative pronouns tointroduce relative clauses.

You place commas around a non-defining clause.

That girl, whose brother is in your class, plays basketball.

That's the girl whose sister goes toschool with us.

Who and whom are used with people. Whom is used after a prepositions and as the objectof the relative clause. Whom has a formal tone.

Children who eat vegetablesare often healthier.

Thom is the guy with whom I usually discussthese problems.

Which is used with things and concepts. That is used with people, things and concepts. That can only be used in defining clauses. My laptop, which has a broken screen, is still working.

The laptop that was stolen from me hasbeen found.

Whose is used with people and things. It is the possessive form.

Maya, whose car is in the shop, came by bus.

My uncle bought a house whose roofwas damaged.

REFERENCE You can find more information on relative clauses inthe Grammar Survey on page 230.

####### Fill in the correct form

Make new sentences by joining the two clauses with a relative pronoun.1 I know the girl. He is talking to her.

2 She is wearing an apron. It is part of her waitress uniform.

3 I’m going to an Italian restaurant. It is my favourite place to eat.

4 Where is the contract? You signed it yesterday.
